Malton: Yorkshire’s Food Capital and home to The Talbot. As friends of The Talbot and Malton locals will be well aware, Malton’s foodie roots go much deeper than the famous Malton Food Lovers Festival that is held each year.
Visitors can wander the stalls at the Monthly Food Markets on the second Saturday of every month, or join us for one of the many other events in the town. The Talbot plays host to the popular Malton Food Tours, where you can munch your way through Malton’s streets, visiting suppliers as you go. More on the Food Tours here >>
In this blog we want to focus on one of the first stops on the Food Tour, which is speciality coffee roasters Roost. Roost is a wholesaler and café in Talbot Yard opposite the hotel. Roost is so close to The Talbot that we can smell the coffee roasting – and note that it’s not the same smell as you’d expect!.
Roost is the creation of husband and wife team David and Ruth Elkington who love to share their passion for coffee. Their roastery and café features exposed brickwork, cushions made from coffee sacks and the impressive Diedrich coffee roasting machine that makes Roost so loved. You can pop in Wednesday to Saturday for a coffee, they are closed for roasting on Monday and Tuesday, and they have a well-deserved day off on Sunday.
Roost offers a huge range of speciality varieties from across the world, their popular roasts are their Brazil, Rwanda and the signature ‘Roost Espresso’ blend.
So that’s the business, let’s meet the team behind the scenes.
David’s role is that of Master Roaster and Logistics, and Ruth is Head Barista and looks after the important Accounts. Originally from Lincolnshire, David and Ruth met on a blind date, and 4 years later David began researching and planning the opening of a coffee shop in Lincolnshire with a close friend, but this was put on hold when one of them found out they were expecting a child. Luckily for us, after the birth of their first daughter, rural life beckoned and the couple dreamed of working together. They moved to Yorkshire to open Roost.
In addition to David and Ruth, the team also includes Erin (daughter number 1), Betsy (daughter number 2), and Skye the Goldendoodle who loves being in the Roost office.
