This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Pride of Malton and Norton Awards. Run by a volunteer local team, the awards have grown over the years into a prestigious occasion to celebrate local community and business heroes.
The Handy Mag’s very own Mandy West has been organising the awards since the very beginning (and well before she became part of our team) and is now part of a team of three in Malton and Norton Community Events which also includes Gemma Bicknell (The Topiary Tree) and David Macdonald (The Talbot).
It takes a huge amount of work to stage the awards. Mandy says “The aim has always been to celebrate those inspirational local people who make Malton and Norton a great place to live and work. It has been a real pleasure to be involved and see these people rewarded.” The awards are funded entirely by support from local businesses and over the years thousands have been raised for local charities with raffles and auctions on the night. In 2018, £2400 was raised for Candlelighters and Sight Support Ryedale and in 2019 the chosen charities are Ryedale Special Families and Camphill Village Trust.
The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday 26th October at York House Marquee at The Talbot which provides a glittering backdrop to a great evening.

Whitby Gin was born following a camping trip in the wilderness of the Outer Hebrides in June 2017.
Inspired by the islands many distilleries, Jess turned to Luke and wondered why her hometown of Whitby didn’t have one of its own. With Jess’ background in business planning and Luke’s experience within food manufacturing, they felt they had the skill set to produce their own local gin. By the time they had arrived back home in Yorkshire, they had created a business plan and ordered a small still.
Production has since moved out of the 40 sq ft utility room where they began and to an old carthouse on a local farm.
The event includes; Gin cocktail on arrival, Full afternoon tea and two gin and tonics to taste during your afternoon tea.
Please note that a £3 booking fee is payable in addition to the ticket cost.

Tim Carroll (Globe/West End/Broadway) directs this magical re-telling of Dickens’s classic Christmas story, performed in the atmospheric York House (Talbot Hotel, Malton) …
This story will transport you, stave by stave, through Scrooge’s life as he journeys out, one bleak Christmas night, with the ghosts that have been sent to reclaim him…
“I was spellbound by Dominic Gerrard’s one-man show of A Christmas Carol. It’s the perfect way to begin your Christmas… “ Lucinda Dickens Hawksley
“A worthy rival to Simon Callow’s one man Carol …”
Independent on Sunday
“ … an exceptionally effective and powerful interpretation of the Christmas story.”
“I came away transfixed and am even writing this with a smile on my face … please please please go to see this if you can.”
The Public Reviews
This performance is suitable for children over ten years of age
Headlining the 2019 festival, the BAFTA-winning Miriam Margolyes was nominated for an Olivier award for her one-woman show, Dickens’ Women. The star of stage and screen featured in Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence, Ladies in Lavender, and played Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter movies.
Clair Challenor-Chadwick, Director of the Malton Dickensian Festival, said: “Miriam is taking a break from her whirlwind schedule to join us this Christmas. She is currently in Australia making a documentary and on her return performs on the stage in London, she is one of the busiest and most sought after actresses and we are thrilled she is taking the time to spend Christmas in Malton.”
A national treasure, Margolyes will perform snippets from her one woman show and talk about her extraordinary life and career. Dickens’ great, great, great granddaughter, Lucinda Hawksley, will also feature and host an audience Q&A with Miriam.
Miriam Margolyes said: “I am delighted to return to Malton again this year. I fell in love with Dickens at school and would like to appeal to children, young people and adults alike to come and enjoy the spirit of ‘A Christmas Carol’. Dickens is the best. Once you’re hooked by his words, his books will enrich you over a lifetime. The evening is going to be enormous fun.”
Clair Challenor-Chadwick said: “The Malton Dickensian Festival is part of our overall work to reclaim Yorkshire’s literary heritage and celebrate the remarkable connection Dickens had to Malton. We are delighted to welcome Miriam and Lucinda back to Malton.”
Paul Emberley from the Wesley Centre in Malton said: “Having an evening with Miriam tops off a brilliant development year for the Wesley Centre as we make final plans to transform our historic building into a vibrant centre for the whole community.
